“Its nice because he is a part of a team,” Ron said.  “He is interacting with his teammates, and with other teams, coaches, and referees.  When you are talking about autism, it’s the social piece that’s hard for him, to interact with other individuals.  Being on a team is a huge benefit for him — that interaction is really good for him.”

“I have made a lot of new friends,” Carriere says about the biggest benefit of her involvement.  “It has also given me more pride and courage.”  Two years ago, Carriere not only became a global messenger, but also a member of the board of directors for Special Olympics Massachusetts.

An accomplished Special Olympics athlete, student and actor, Peter Johnson has participated in swimming, softball, track & field and tennis as well as the Global Messenger program. He stars in the recently released movie, The Child King.

Volunteer Profile: Melissa Lunden -
Lynn, MA


Three times a week for the past five years Lunden has generously donated her time to SOMA personally writing thank you notes to our valued sponsors. She bowls in a women’s league, she is active with her church and works at a nursing home during the evenings.

Athlete Profile: Elizabeth Taft -
Pembroke, MA


Elizabeth Taft, 73, has been participating in Special Olympics since 1987. Last year was a comeback year for Taft after recovering from a small heart attack; she participated in the Senior Games and garnered a bronze medal in race-walking and a gold medal in horseshoes.

Together they have been helping SOMA for over four years. What may make them most unique is their ability to have volunteering be something they share with each other. Though they do not do the same thing at the events, they have both been able to bring their talents to the organization.
